受賞時のお気持ちHow do you feel winning the award?

このような光栄な賞を頂けたことは本当に嬉しかったです。選考してくれた審査員の方々のお気持ちを裏切らないように精一杯頑張らせて頂きます。そして、自分がTFAに応募していると話したブランドに携わってくれる皆が、その後押しをしてくれるかのように最高のクリエイションをしてくれたおかげだと思います。その皆に感謝しかないです。

I was really honored and happy winning such an auspicious award. I will do my best to live up to the expectations of the judges that chose me. And I would like to give thanks to the great support of everyone that I told about applying to this award, everyone involved in this brand, because they helped us in making our best creation, as if to cheer us off from behind. My heart is filled with appreciation towards all these people.

世界中にはさまざまなアワードやコンテストがありますが、その中でTFAはどのようなアワードだと思いますか。There are many different types of awards around the world. What type of award is the TFA to you?

世界にどのようなアワードがあるのかあまり把握していないので浅い知識ですが、経費が国内展とは比較できないほどかかる海外展で、初回や2回目と、認知度が低くどのような成果を出せるか未知数のスタートの時にサポートして頂けるのは本当に大きいと思っています。そして凱旋イベントと、国内外で連動できる貴重なアワードだと思っています。

I’m really not aware of what kind of awards exist around the world so my knowledge is very limited. But I know that compared to doing exhibitions in Japan, the costs of doing overseas exhibitions are so much higher, and to risk such high costs when we are virtually unknown, is extremely difficult. I think it is especially such a big help to be given the support to hold the first and second exhibits, when the level of acknowledgement of our brand is still very low, and the potential of our success is still unforeseeable. And it also provides for triumphant return events. I think TFA is a precious award that interlocks with both domestic and international activities.

TFA2015 & TFA2016 受賞デザイナーの活動などをご覧になって、どう感じられましたか。How did you feel after seeing the activities of the TFA 2015 & TFA 2016 award winning designers?

元々、国内や海外でもご活躍されている諸先輩方がTFAをきっかけにさらに素晴らしいご活躍をされていると思っています。自分も成果をしっかり上げないと、というプレッシャーにもなっていますので身が引き締まります。

I’ve seen senior brands that have already been doing well in both domestic and overseas markets, do even better after being awarded the TFA. I feel pressure in that I must continue with this flow and show definite results, but at the same time, I’m excited to challenge myself and try my very best.

パリのショールームでの発表に向けて、意気込みをお願いいたします。Can we catch a bit of your enthusiasm looking towards the announcement at the Paris Showroom?

とにかく自分と皆で悩んで考えて創りあげたものを世界中の人に見てもらえる、知ってもらえる機会があることに心からワクワクしています。良い悪いの賛否は別として、日本にはこんなブランドがある、ということをまずは知ってもらいたいです。

I’m just really excited about being given this chance to show our creation and make it known to people around the world. Our creation that we’ve put our heads together to create, and poured our heart and soul into. Putting aside whether our brand is received well or not, above all, I really want to let the world know that in Japan, such a brand exists.

TOKYO FASHION AWARDというチャンスと、ご縁に恵まれたことをとても光栄に思いました。
今日まで携わって頂いた全ての方々への感謝と、モノづくりのきっかけとなったバレエへの慈しみがさらに深まりました。

I feel very honored in being blessed with this opportunity and chance known as the TOKYO FASHION AWARD.
My deep appreciation towards all those people who have been involved in our brand up to today, and my love towards ballet, which was the start of my involvement in creativity, has deepened even more.

レディースブランドにおきましては、1月のファッションウィークにてコレクションを発表することは、通常よりも早い時期での展開となりますが、新たなきっかけの後押しとなる魅力的なアワードだと思います。

From a lady’s brand point of view, announcing a collection at the Fashion Week in January means having to make earlier developments, but I think it is an attractive award that provides new opportunities.

TFA2015 & TFA2016 受賞デザイナーの活動などをご覧になって、どう感じられましたか。How did you feel after seeing the activities of the TFA 2015 & TFA 2016 award winning designers?

新しいステージでは目的を明確に持ち、ブランドとして必要な結果を成し得るために創造する力がより必要だと感じました。制作に励んで行きたいと思います。

It made me realize that at this new stage, I will have to have clear goals, and build strength to create in order to produce sure results that are necessary for the brand. I intend to work hard on creating.

パリのショールームでの発表に向けて、意気込みをお願いいたします。Can we catch a bit of your enthusiasm looking towards the announcement at the Paris Showroom?

身の引き締まる思いです。
専門性を活かし、人の心にずっと残る様なモノづくりをより深めたいです。

I will do my best.
Making good use of my specialty, I would like to further my creativity in making things that leave lingering impressions in people’s hearts.

大変光栄でした。受賞いただけた事大変感謝しております。 同時に、メンズ時期に発表した経験がないのでスケジュール管理、しっかりと準備を整え挑みたいと思います。

I felt so very honored. I'm so thankful for being awarded. At the same time, I've never made collection announcements during the men's term, so I intend to adjust our schedule accordingly, and prepare well towards this challenge.

世界中にはさまざまなアワードやコンテストがありますが、その中でTFAはどのようなアワードだと思いますか。There are many different types of awards around the world. What type of award is the TFA to you?

大変貴重なアワードだと思います。我々のような小規模なブランドにとって続けて2シーズンの展示会場、渡航&宿泊費の支援は事実上大変有り難く思います。そして審査員の方々が大手トップバイヤーという点が、実売するにあたり現実的ではないかと思います。

I think it is a very valuable award. For a small scale brand like ours, support for two consecutive seasons worth of exhibitions overseas, travel and hotel expenses, is extremely helpful, and we are so very grateful. And because the judges are all top buyers of major retailers, I think it is a realistic award that leads to actual sales.

TFA2015 & TFA2016 受賞デザイナーの活動などをご覧になって、どう感じられましたか。How did you feel after seeing the activities of the TFA 2015 & TFA 2016 award winning designers?

TFAをきっかけにブランドの今後の方向性や活動の幅が広がっているようで、我々も独自の方向性を考えていければと感じました。

It seems that after the TFA, the direction and activities of each brand has spread, which makes us hopeful to find our own direction in the process.

パリのショールームでの発表に向けて、意気込みをお願いいたします。Can we catch a bit of your enthusiasm looking towards the announcement at the Paris Showroom?

受賞いただけたのは沢山の方々の支えがあっての事です。この貴重な機会を最大に活かせるよう、既存店はもちろん、新規開拓、そして強みの1つである日本のものづくりで納得したコレクションを発表したいと思います。

We were able to win this award with the support of many people. In order to fully utilize this precious opportunity, in addition to strengthening existing channels, we will try to develop new markets, and work hard to announce collections filled with characteristics of our forte, which Is Japanese craftsmanship.

とにかく嬉しかった。支えてくれている人に本当に感謝しました。

I was simply very happy. And I felt great gratitude towards the people who support me.

世界的なアワード／コンテストのことは詳しくわかりませんが、TFAは東京で活動するデザイナーにとって、多くのチャンスをあたえてくれるアワードだと思います。

I don't know in detail about awards around the world, but for designers who are active in Tokyo, I think this award provides many opportunities.

TFA2015 & TFA2016 受賞デザイナーの活動などをご覧になって、どう感じられましたか。How did you feel after seeing the activities of the TFA 2015 & TFA 2016 award winning designers?

良いブランド揃いなのでとても刺激になっています。負けないように頑張りたいです。

They are all very good brands, and I am stimulated by them. I intend to work hard to live up to them.

パリのショールームでの発表に向けて、意気込みをお願いいたします。Can we catch a bit of your enthusiasm looking towards the announcement at the Paris Showroom?

良いものを作り、評価され1社でも多くオーダーをもらいたいです。

I hope to make good items, become recognized, and receive as many orders as possible.

大変光栄ですが、同時にプレッシャーもそれなりに感じました。

It is a great honor, but at the same time, I felt a certain amount of pressure.

世界中にはさまざまなアワードやコンテストがありますが、その中でTFAはどのようなアワードだと思いますか。There are many different types of awards around the world. What type of award is the TFA to you?

世界的に、というのは把握していないので分かりませんが、まだキャリアも実績も少ない自分を選出していただいたくらいなので、「発掘」するという目的をしっかり掲げている、日本では大変希少なアワードだと思いました。

I’m not aware of awards around the world so I can’t say anything there. But with regards to TFA, seeing that they’ve chosen a designer with little experience or achievements like myself, I think they are an extremely rare award in Japan with the clear aim of “digging-up”.

TFA2015 & TFA2016 受賞デザイナーの活動などをご覧になって、どう感じられましたか。How did you feel after seeing the activities of the TFA 2015 & TFA 2016 award winning designers?

皆さん着実にステップアップされているようにお見受けしておりますので、自分もその流れに乗っていけるよう精進したいです。

I think that all the brands have surely made a step up, and I wish to do my best in following in their footsteps.

パリのショールームでの発表に向けて、意気込みをお願いいたします。Can we catch a bit of your enthusiasm looking towards the announcement at the Paris Showroom?

既にパリで展示会は行っているので特別な思いはございませんが、スケジュールが通常より1ヶ月早いので、なるべく主張をコンパクトにして力強いコレクションを見せられたらと思います。

I’ve already done an exhibition in Paris, so I don’t have any special feelings there, but since the schedule will be approximately one month ahead of usual, I’m hoping to condense my representation, and show a powerful collection.

受賞時のお気持ちHow do you feel winning the award?

素直に嬉しいです。その次に、春夏～秋冬までの移行時間の短さに少し戸惑いも感じています。

I was simply happy. But after that, I felt slightly baffled at the lack of transition time between the Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter seasons.

世界中にはさまざまなアワードやコンテストがありますが、その中でTFAはどのようなアワードだと思いますか。There are many different types of awards around the world. What type of award is the TFA to you?

あまり詳しくないので何とも言えませんが、日本国内のコンテストの中では一番チャンスに直結するものかと思っています。賞金ではなく機会がもらえる事が我々の職業においては一番のメリットかと思います。

I don't know much about awards around the world so it is difficult to say, but among all the contests in Japan, I think TFA has the most direct connection with opportunities. I think that being given opportunities, instead of just award money, is the largest merit In our profession.

TFA2015 & TFA2016 受賞デザイナーの活動などをご覧になって、どう感じられましたか。How did you feel after seeing the activities of the TFA 2015 & TFA 2016 award winning designers?

海外で活躍されているブランドを見て羨ましいなと思っていました。

I was envious, seeing brands doing well overseas.

パリのショールームでの発表に向けて、意気込みをお願いいたします。Can we catch a bit of your enthusiasm looking towards the announcement at the Paris Showroom?

今までと大きく変わる心境の変化はありません。クオリティであったり、価格帯であったりと、そう言った観点も含めて今まで通りやれればと思っています。

There's not a big difference in my state of mind. Whether its quality wise or price wise or from any other aspect, I simply think I should continue doing what I've always been doing.

現地のバイヤーの反応についてお聞かせ下さい。How was the reaction of the buyers in Paris?

海外のバイヤーは日本以上にオリジナリティを重視する傾向があり、他にないものを探している姿勢を強く感じました。1回目のショールーム（2016年1月実施）では、自分たちのコレクションに対してエレガントと表現するバイヤーが多かったのですが、先行する競合ブランドの間に入っていくためにはより強いオリジナリティが必要だと感じ、2回目のショールーム（2016年6月実施）ではそれを表現することを心がけました。1年前に単独で行った展示会では、来場されるバイヤーのほとんどがブランドに多少なりとも興味を持っている方たちだったのですが、「showroom.tokyo」では、自分たちの存在を知らない方たちにも多く見てもらうことができ、大きな刺激になりました。

Overseas buyers have a tendency to value originality, more than Japanese buyers do. I strongly felt their stance towards looking for something unique. At the first showroom (executed in January, 2016), there were many buyers that expressed our brand as “elegant”, but in order to stand out among pre-existing rivals, I felt a need to express a stronger originality, so for the second showroom (executed in June, 2016), I tried to make sure to express that. At our solo exhibition, most of the buyers that visited our exhibition were interested in our brand more or less, but at the “showroom”, we were able to have our brand seen by buyers who do not even know that we exist, which was quite a stimulating experience.

今年3月に行われた東京のファッション・ウィークでのイベントについてはいかがでしたか。What is your impression of the event during Fashion Week TOKYO, this past March?

以前から、いつかはショー形式でコレクションを発表したいという思いがあったので、ブランドにとって非常に良い機会になりました。今シーズンは、「交わる線 LINE of intersection」がテーマだったこともあり、ショーではモデルの個性とブランドの世界観が交わった時にどのような見え方になるかということを意識しました。モデルのキャスティングをはじめ、楽しみであると同時に不安を感じていた要素が多かったのですが、最終的には上手く形にすることができ、良い反応を得ることができました。コレクション発表は展示会で十分だと考えていた時期もあったのですが、やはりショーというのはブランドの世界観を高いレベルで表現できる手段であり、自分たちにとってもプラスになる要素が多いので、今後も継続して行いたいと考えています。

I’ve been hoping to announce my collection in a show style for a long time now, so this was a great opportunity for the brand. This seasons theme was “LINE of intersection”, so I was conscious of what happens when the personalities of show models intersect with the brand’s world view. I was feeling both excitement and anxiety towards many aspects, like the casting of models, but in the end, I was able to put everything into shape well, and I received good reactions. There was a time when I used to think that exhibition announcements of collections were sufficient enough, but shows are a means to express the world view of the brand on a higher level, and has many aspects that are advantageous to us, so I would like to continue doing shows.

TOKYO FASHION AWARDのプログラムに参加したことは、ブランドにとって、どのような経験になりましたか。What kind of experiences has your brand gained by participating in a program of the TOKYO FASHION AWARD?

自分たちが向かいたいと考えていた方向性を推し進める貴重な機会を与えていただき、ブランドとしても大きく成長できたと実感しています。2シーズンにわたるパリでの展示を通して、海外展開の感触をつかむことができ、今後の道筋もだいぶ見えてきました。何よりも継続することが大切だと思っているので、次の2シーズンも引き続き「showroom.tokyo」に参加しつつ、その先の動きを探っていくつもりです。

I think it gave us a precious opportunity to step forward in the direction we wanted to go, and I feel that we, as a brand, has matured a lot. Through the two seasons of exhibiting in Paris, we have gained a sure foothold for future overseas developments, and future steps that need to be taken have become clearer. I think continuance is the most important thing, so I intend to continue participating in “showroom.tokyo” for the next two seasons, and try to grasp a feel for our future.

今後の展望について教えて下さい。Please tell us of your future plans.

東京でのショーではブランドとして初めて女性モデルを起用したのですが、近いうちにレディスラインも展開できればと考えています。また、2シーズン目となった6月の「showroom.tokyo」ではコレクションの点数をしぼり、強いアイテムを中心にパリに持って行ったのですが、10月に開催する東京のショーではフルコレクションを発表する予定です。今後アジアの市場は、世界的に見てもより成長していくと思いますし、その中で自分たちが日本を拠点にしていることは恵まれた状況だと受け止めています。ブランドにとって東京は今後も重要な発表の場だと考えているので、海外の展示会と日本のショーを継続的に行いながら、自分たちのクリエーションを高めていきたいです。

At the show in Tokyo, we used female models for the first time, and in the near future, I’m thinking of creating a lady’s line. Also, for the “showroom.tokyo” held in June, which was the second season from me, I mainly selected strong items from my collection and brought only a concentrated collection to Paris, but at the show in Tokyo, in October, I intend to announce my collection in full. From a global point of view, I think the Asian market will continue to grow hereafter, and with this in mind, I feel it is a blessing that we are based in Japan. I think that Tokyo is a valuable place of announcement for the brand, so I hope to keep progressing and bettering our creations through continuing to do exhibitions overseas and shows in Japan.

現地のバイヤーの反応についてお聞かせ下さい。How was the reaction of the buyers in Paris?

池内：良い反応を得ることができ、海外の卸先も徐々に広がっています。特にショールームの2回目（2016年6月実施）は、1回目に見ていただいたお店がピックアップしていただくなど、継続して積み上げることの手応えがありました。2シーズンを通して感じたことは、日本のバイヤーよりも海外のバイヤーの方が、実際に手に取って興味を示してくれる服とそうでない服の差が大きいということでした。今後は自分たちなりに研究を重ねて、意識的にチャンネルを合わせて、ピックアップしてもらえるアイテムを増やしていかなければいけないと感じました。

Ikeuchi: We received positive reactions, and overseas sales channels are gradually spreading. Especially at the second “showroom” exhibition (executed in June, 2016), buyers who looked at our collection the first time, picked up our products this time, giving us a sure feel of continuance and building-up. One thing that we learned through the two seasons is that, unlike Japanese buyers, overseas buyers are clearer on which items they are interested in and not, by actually picking up and touching those items they are interested in. They will not pick up the items they are not interested in, so the difference is clear. From now on, we intend to make studies of our own in order to consciously set our channel to their taste, so that the number of items that they pick up will increase.

森：これまで以上に多くのバイヤーに自分たちの洋服を見てもらうことができましたが、パリだとシャツをはじめとしたカジュアルアイテムはあまり見てもらえず、グラフィックやカッティングのインパクトが強いアイテムなどに興味を持たれていました。私たちはニューヨークでも展示をしていますが、やはりアメリカではよりカジュアルなものが好まれますし、展示する場所に応じて構成や見せ方を変えていくことも大切だと感じました。

Mori: The number of buyers looking at our clothes has increased more than ever before, but in Paris, they were more interested in items with a strong impact, such as graphics and edgy cutting, and did not seem to be interested in casual items, such as shirts. We hold exhibitions in N.Y. too, but in the U.S., casual items are favored, which has taught us that it is important that we change the structure of our exhibition and how we show our items, depending upon the place we exhibit.

今年3月に行われた東京のファッション・ウィークでのイベントについてはいかがでしたか。What is your impression of the event during Fashion Week TOKYO, this past March?

森：今回はファッション・ウィークでの発表でしたが、私たちはあくまでもアウトドラブランドとして、機能性を重視したものづくりをしているということをしっかり伝えられるプレゼンテーションにしたいと考えました。また、自然の中で遊ぶことの楽しさを提案したいという気持ちがあるので、会場をなるべく屋外に近い環境にすることを目指しました。演出家と相談しながら、暗闇の中に星空が広がっているかのような空間をつくり、その中でリフレクタ―ステッチというオリジナルの糸や、リフレクターシートなどが光って見えるような演出をしました。

Mori: Despite the fact that this was an announcement at Fashion Week, we decided to make a presentation placing value on function, to clearly convey our stance as an out-doors brand. In addition, because we also aim to convey the fun of playing in nature, we wanted to create an outdoors-like environment within the indoors venue. Through discussions with the stage director, we created a space that looked like a star filled night sky, so that our original threads called reflector stitch, and reflector sheets would glow in the dark.

TOKYO FASHION AWARDのプログラムに参加したことは、ブランドにとって、どのような経験になりましたか。What kind of experiences has your brand gained by participating in a program of the TOKYO FASHION AWARD?

池内：日本の展示会にはなかなか来てもらえないような海外のショップの方に洋服を見ていただいたことは非常に刺激になりましたし、賞をいただいたことで海外はもちろん、日本のショップやお客さまに対しても改めてブランドの訴求をすることができました。パリでさまざまなブランドやショールームを回ったことで得たこともたくさんありましたし、他の受賞ブランドや審査員の方たちとのさまざまな情報交換を通して、自分たちがブランドを成長させるための課題が見えてきたことは、非常に価値のある経験になりました。

Ikeuchi: Having overseas buyers, who cannot come to Japan to easily, actually see our clothing, was extremely stimulating, and winning the award really helped us in appealing our brand, not only overseas, but also to shops and customers in Japan. At Paris, there was much that we gained by visiting various brands and showrooms. Also, through exchange of information with other award winning brands and judges, gave us insight into subjects that we need to tackle in order for the brand to grow, which was an extremely valuable experience for us.

今後の展望について教えて下さい。Please tell us of your future plans.

森：今後も引き続き、何かしらかの形で海外での発表は続けていきたいと考えています。海外では積極的にブランドの認知を上げるために、何らかのアピールしていく必要性を感じました。一方、国内に関しては、直営店を持つことを視野に入れつつ、商品を買ってもらっているファンの方やアウトドアに興味はあるけれどきっかけがなかったような方たちと一緒に山の中に入るツアーなども行いながら、アウトドア遊びの導入や底上げになるような取り組みにも力を入れていきたいと考えています。

Mori: We hope to continue announcing overseas in some form or another. In order to actively spread acknowledgement of the brand overseas, we strongly feel a need to appeal in some way. As for domestic developments, while keeping one eye on opening our own direct shop, we are also thinking of arranging nature tours, such as mountain climbing, and other events, for the fans of our brand and for those people who are interested in the outdoors but haven’t had a chance, as an effort to spread the joys and pleasures of outdoor life.

現地のバイヤーの反応についてお聞かせ下さい。How was the reaction of the buyers in Paris?

全体的に日本のバイヤーとは視点がだいぶ違うのではないでしょうか。海外のバイヤーは、他のブランドと並んだ時に際立つかどうかという観点からブランドの雰囲気や洋服の表情を見ていて、そうした部分を縫製などのクオリティ面以上に重視しているように感じました。また、今回自分たちがバイヤーとのマッチング以上に意識していたことは、現地のフォトグラファーやスタイリストらとのつながりをつくることでした。現地では、展示会以外の場でも彼らとディスカッションができ、その後一緒にシューティングをする機会なども生まれました。インディペンデントなブランドである自分たちにとって、こうしたクリエイターたちと感性をぶつけ合いながら、オリジナリティがある表現をしていくことは非常に大切で、2回目のパリのショールーム（2016年6月実施）では、そうした部分でも大きな手応えを得ることができました。

I think, in most part, their point of view largely differs from that of Japanese buyers. Overseas buyers looks at the brand to see if it stands out when lined with other brands, the mood of the brand and expressions that the clothing possess. I felt they are less concerned with quality factors, such as sewing. On the other hand, one thing we were more concerned with than our matching up with buyers, was to make a connection with local photographers and stylists. At Paris, we were able to have discussions with them outside the exhibit venue, which led to later shooting opportunities. As an independent brand such as ours, it is extremely important for us to directly exchange creative senses with such creators, in order to continue making creations with originality. At the second showroom in Paris (executed in June, 2016), we felt a sure response in such aspects also.

今年3月に行われた東京のファッション・ウィークでのイベントについてはいかがでしたか。What is your impression of the event during Fashion Week TOKYO, this past March?

東京での発表に関しては、自分たちのブランドの世界観を表現することに集中しました。自分が惹かれてきたデスメタルやブラックメタルが生まれた歴史背景に着目し、「逆五芒星」をテーマに、6体に絞ったモデルやオーケストラ演奏、儀式的な演出などを通して、禁じられた欲望を解き放つような世界観を表現しました。当初から賛否両論があることを予想していたのですが、カウンターカルチャーの歴史背景を汲み取った表現が若い世代の人たちに新鮮に映ったようで、国内の卸先からはセールスにも良い影響が出ているということを聞いています。また、このショーをきっかけに海外からのコンタクトもあるなど、さまざまな反響がありました。

As for our announcement in Tokyo, we concentrated on expressing the world view of our brand. I’ve been attracted to death metal and black metal, so I turned my attention to the historic background in which these were born. With a reverse pentagram motif and limiting to 6 models, along with an orchestra performance and a ritualistic production, I tried to express a world view of releasing prohibited desires. From the beginning, I anticipated that it would be received by arguments both for and against, but our efforts in trying to grasp the historical background of counter cultures seems to have been fresh to younger generation, and I’ve received word from our domestic retailers that there has been a good influence on sales. After this show, we’ve received all sorts of positive reactions, including contact from overseas.

TOKYO FASHION AWARDのプログラムに参加したことは、ブランドにとって、どのような経験になりましたか。What kind of experiences has your brand gained by participating in a program of the TOKYO FASHION AWARD?

2シーズンにわたってパリで展示をしたことで、ブランドのオリジナリティをより強く打ち出していく必要性を感じました。パリでは、現地のストリートカルチャーを背負っているような人たちとも会ったのですが、彼らのファッションというのは、それぞれが育ってきた環境や生活と直結しているんです。それは、裕福で平和な国で育った日本人のリアリティとまったく違うものですし、自分の本当の感性というものを洋服に落とし込んでいかないといけないということを彼らから教えてもらいました。もちろん、街で着られる洋服をつくることも大切なのですが、自分のアイデンティティを見つめ直し、リミッターを外した状態で表現していくことがこれからの課題です。そして、こうしたことを考えるきっかけになった今回の機会にはとても感謝しています。

Through the 2 seasons of exhibiting in Paris, I’ve felt the need to more strongly express originality of our brand. At Paris, I had an opportunity to meet with people who are at the center of local street culture, and I noticed that their fashion is directly connected with the background and lifestyle in which each individual grew up in. It is a realty, completely alien from that of most Japanese, who grow up in a plentiful and peaceful country, and they have taught me that I need to reflect my true senses into my clothing. Of course it is important to make clothes that are wearable in town, but my theme from now on, is to re-evaluate my identity, and make creative expressions with my limiter turned off. And I am very thankful for this opportunity, which made me think this way.

今後の展望について教えて下さい。Please tell us of your future plans.

来年の1月と6月にも継続してパリでコレクションを発表する予定です。TFAをきっかけに、つながることができた海外のスタイリストやアーティストたちとは、今後もコラボレーションを続けながら、クリエイティブなものを生み出していきたいと思っています。また、先日はロンドンのPR会社からもオファーをいただいたので、今後は自分たちのクリエーションをメディアなどにもアピールしながら、来年につなげていきたいと考えています。

I intend to continue exhibiting at Paris, next year in January and June. Also, I intend to continue collaborations with the overseas stylists and artists that I’ve met thanks to TFA, in order to continue giving birth to creative items. Also, we received an offer from a PR company in London, so with their support, we hope to appeal our creations to the media more, which will hopefully connect to business next year.

現地のバイヤーの反応についてお聞かせ下さい。How was the reaction of the buyers in Paris?

スケジュールの関係上、ショールームの前半はメンズのバイヤーが多かったのですが、中盤以降はレディスのバイヤーも来場し、新規のオーダーをいただくことができました。メンズに関しては、最初のシーズンはレディスの延長でつくったところがあったのですが、2回目のショールーム（2016年6月実施）では、逆にメンズ発想のテキスタイルをつくり、それをレディスに展開したことで、これまでにはなかったマニッシュでシャープなアイテムが生まれました。これらのコレクションは海外のバイヤーから非常に好評で、ブランドの新しい切り口が見せられたと感じています。

Due to schedule reasons, the first half of the term was mainly men’s buyers, but from the middle and beyond, lady’s buyers began to visit, and we received new orders. In the first showing, we created a men’s collection that was sort of an extension of our lady’s collection, but in the second showroom showing (executed in June, 2016), we reversed our way of thinking and created textiles based on men’s items and used that in our lady’s line. Thanks to that, we ended up with mannish, sharp items, like never before. These items were received very well by overseas buyers, and I feel we have been able to show a new facet of our brand.

今年3月に行われた東京のファッション・ウィークでのイベントについてはいかがでしたか。What is your impression of the event during Fashion Week TOKYO, this past March?

ファクトリーブランドである私たちは、「ファッション」と「ものづくり」というふたつの側面を同じくらい大切にしているのですが、東京でのプレゼンテーションは、それを伝える良い機会になると考えていました。自分たちにとっては、シーズンテーマやスタイルを打ち出すこと以上に、ブランド独自の背景やコンテンツを発信することが大切だったので、最新コレクションの発表だけではなく、コレクションのアーカイブ、ボタンや素材などのパーツ、工場の写真や映像なども併せて展示しました。他の受賞ブランドに比べると、かなり異質な発表形式でしたので、どんな反響があるのかドキドキしていたのですが、伝えたいことを直球で投げかけたアプローチに対して、ジャーナリストなどから好意的な反応を得ることができました。

Since we are a factory brand, we value both “fashion” and “production” aspects in same degrees, and we felt that a presentation in Tokyo would be a good opportunity to express this. For us, it is more important to convey the brand’s original background and contents, rather than setting forth season themes and styles, so along with our latest collection, we exhibited collection archives, bottom and textile parts, and photos, movies of our factory. It was an announcement style very alien from any of the other award winning brands so we were very nervous about the reactions to it, but our very direct approach of what we wanted to convey, received favorable reactions, especially from journalists.

TOKYO FASHION AWARDのプログラムに参加したことは、ブランドにとって、どのような経験になりましたか。What kind of experiences has your brand gained by participating in a program of the TOKYO FASHION AWARD?

パリのショールームに来場されるバイヤーたちはレベルが高かったですし、過去に参加していた海外の合同展示会に比べると、ブランドの背景などをゆっくり伝えることができ、とても良い機会になりました。また、私たちは展示会ベースで販路を拡げてきたため、メディアと接する機会はあまり多くなかったのですが、今回このような賞をいただいたことで、さまざまな方面から認知していただくことができ、すでにリクルートなどにも良い影響が出ています。今回のアワード受賞をきっかけにメンズをスタートすることもできましたし、さらにそれをレディスコレクションの進化にもつなげられたことは大きな収穫でした。また、メンズ主体の他の受賞ブランドの方たちと交流する機会を持てたことも良い刺激になりました。

The level of the buyers visiting the showroom was high, and compared to the other overseas joint exhibitions we’ve participated in the past, we were able to convey the background of our brand more extensively, so it was a very good opportunity. Also, because we’ve been spreading our sales channels, mainly through exhibition booths, so we haven’t had much opportunities to meet with the press, but by being awarded such an award as this one, we’ve received acknowledgement from all sorts of directions, and positive effects are already appearing, for example, in our recruiting efforts. Thanks to winning this award, we were not only able to start our men’s collection, but were also able to extend that into our lady’s collection to make it evolve, which was a great gain for us. In addition, exchanging information with other men’s based award winners, was quite stimulating for us.

今後の展望について教えて下さい。Please tell us of your future plans.

今後も継続して海外での発表を続けていく予定です。これまでは、年4回の国内展示会に加え、海外でも2回の展示をしていたのですが、来年はこれらに加えて、「showroom.tokyo」にも引き続き参加しながら、今後どのような形で発表を続けていくことが自分たちにとってベストなのかを探っていくつもりです。また、ブランド全体のトピックとしては、2017年秋冬シーズンにロゴやWebサイトを含めた全体のリニューアルを予定しており、それを機にメンズコレクションの卸も本格的にスタートします。中長期的な目標としては、小さなファクトリーを併設した直営店を開くということもいずれ実現させたいと考えています。

We intend to continue announcing overseas. Up to now, we had being holding four exhibitions in Japan, and two exhibitions overseas annually. From next year, in addition to this and continued participation to “showroom.tokyo”, we would like to consider the best way to continue announcements for our brand. Also as a topic for our brand as a whole, starting from the 2017 A/W season, we are planning an overall renewal, including our logo, and WEB site, and with this, we plan to put our men’s collection into full production and sales. As for our mid to long term goal, we would like to realize the opening of a direct shop with a small factory attached to it.

現地のバイヤーの反応についてお聞かせ下さい。How was the reaction of the buyers in Paris?

日本での展示会と比べると、一点一点のアイテムを見ていただく時間が短かったこともあり、やはりディテールや風合いなどにわかりやすい提案を入れたものが、たとえ価格が高いものでもピックアップされるケースが多かったです。そうした様子を見ていて、ある程度バイヤーの方たちが編集しやすいような打ち出しをしていく必要性を強く感じました。また、2回目のショール―ムでは、1回目にピックアップしていただいたバイヤーのレスポンスが良くなっていたことからも、1シーズン限りではなく、継続することで浸透していく部分も少なからずあるように思いました。

Because the time is limited compared to exhibits in Japan, they were not able to examine each item closely, so I found that those items with eye catching details and clear suggestions, had a tendency to be picked up, even if the price was high. Seeing this, I felt a strong need to arrange my presentation in a way to make it easier for the buyers to edit. Also, from the fact that the response of the buyers who picked up my items at the first time was better at the second showroom, I feel that continued exhibit leads to further penetration, rather than just one season.

今年3月に行われた東京のファッション・ウィークでのイベントについてはいかがでしたか。What is your impression of the event during Fashion Week TOKYO, this past March?

以前からショーのような発表形式には漠然と興味を持っていたので、非常にやりがいがある取り組みでした。普段のコレクションでは明確なテーマを設定しないことが多いのですが、今回はショーということもあり、「アンビバレンス」というテーマのもと、海外での発表を意識してつくったアイキャッチなアイテムと、以前から継続して取り組んできたブランドの核となるアイテムを対比して見せることを意識しました。実は、当初はインスタレーションでの発表をイメージしていて、ショー形式で見せることは急遽決まった感じではありましたが、結果として短時間で瞬発力がある表現ができたことは効果的だった気がしています。これまではあまり接点がなかったメディア関係者に見ていただいたり、ショーを終えた直後に海外からのコンタクトがあったりと、さまざまな反響が得られました。

I’ve had a vague interest in announcing my collection in a show style, so this was an attempt which I felt extremely worthwhile. Normally in my collections, I don’t set a clear theme, but since this time was a show, a created a collection under the theme of “ambivalence”, with a contrast of eye-catching items keeping in mind oversea sales, against core items of the brand which I’ve been continuing from before. To tell you the truth, at first I was planning to announce in installation style, and talks of the show sort of popped out of nowhere, but as a result, thanks to the lack of time, I think the collection ended up with an instantaneous force, which was quite effective. Thanks to the show, I received all sorts of reactions, for example, my collection was seen by the media, whom I’ve never really had much contact with up to now, and I received contact from overseas, right after the show.

TOKYO FASHION AWARDのプログラムに参加したことは、ブランドにとって、どのような経験になりましたか。What kind of experiences has your brand gained by participating in a program of the TOKYO FASHION AWARD?

おぼろげにやってみたいと思っていたことにチャレンジでき、非常に良い機会になりました。海外での展示と国内でのショーをすることで、どの程度のコストがかかるのかということなど勉強になることが多かったですし、1回目のTFA受賞者をはじめ、すでに海外でのビジネス経験を持つ方たちのお話をお聞きする機会もあり、とても参考になりました。

It has been an extremely good opportunity in that it enabled me to challenge things that I had was only vaguely interested in. By experiencing overseas exhibitions and domestic shows I learned a lot, for example, what kind of costs are involved. It also gave me opportunities to speak to designers who already have experience in overseas business, including the winners of the first TFA, which provided me with many useful information.

今後の展望について教えて下さい。Please tell us of your future plans.

今後も海外での発表は続けていきたいと考えています。たとえ海外のショップと取引が始まったとしても、店頭実績が出なければ難しいですし、何よりも大切なことはしっかり継続していくことだと思います。僕たちの会社はまだ経験が少なく、スタッフみんなで考えながら一つひとつのことにチャレンジしているような段階なので、今後はこれまでに続けてきたことをブラッシュアップしていく必要があると感じています。また、これまでの経験上、無理に何かを推し進めようとしても良い着地をしないケースが多いので、縁やタイミングというものを大切にしながら、着実に活動を続けていきたいですね。

I’d like to continue announcing overseas. Even if transactions with overseas shops starts, if my items don’t sell well on the sales floor, continuance with that shop will be difficult. And above all, I think that continuance is the most important thing. Our company still lacks experience and up to now, we’ve overcome each challenge, step-by-step, with our whole staff putting our heads together every step of the way, but I think we’ve come to a stage when we need to brush-up on what we’ve been doing. Also, from past experience we know that if we try to push something by force, it tends to end-up in failure, so we would like to steadily continue our activities, whilst placing value on timing and chance.

現地のバイヤーの反応についてお聞かせ下さい。How was the reaction of the buyers in Paris?

いくつかオーダーはいただきましたが、完全にゼロからスタートし、海外のバイヤーに振り向いてもらうためには大変なことだと感じました。特に自分たちのようなブランドは、Tシャツ一枚をラックに掛けるだけではなかなか世界観を伝えにくいので、土俵として難しい点もあり、さらにブランドが認知されていない状態からビジネスを成立させるのは並大抵なことじゃないと痛感しました。そもそも海外まで来て、数件のオーダーで一喜一憂しているような悠長なことはしていられないという危機感を覚えましたし、今後海外で継続的に展示を続けたとして、それがビジネスとして成立するのかということなども含め、今後のブランドの動きについてかなり考えさせられました。

We received some orders, but we realized how difficult it would be to start from zero, and have overseas buyers notice us. Especially for a brand such as ours, it is difficult to convey the brand’s world view by simply hanging a T-shirt and the basis itself being difficult. Plus, it became painfully clear how difficult, virtually impossible it would be for an unknown brand to realize business. We felt a sense of crisis from the fact that, having come all this way to a foreign country, we were making a fuss, smiling and crying over a few orders. Assuming we continue overseas exhibitions, it made us consider hard and strong whether we will be able to establish ourselves as a business, and about future developments of the brand.

今年3月に行われた東京のファッション・ウィークでのイベントについてはいかがでしたか。What is your impression of the event during Fashion Week TOKYO, this past March?

昨年3月にブランド15周年を記念したランウェイショーを行い、それを最後に当分ショーはしないつもりだったので、今回思わぬ発表の機会が与えられ、どのような見せ方にするか正直悩みました。色々考えた末に、過去のファッション・ウィークで行ってきたショーとは少し違う意識で、原宿をベースにしているうちのブランドらしいプレゼンテーションをしようと決め、プロや外国人のモデルは使わずに、ストリートにいるミュージシャンなど最近活躍し始めている若い日本人を中心に起用しました。結果として、周囲からは今までで最もWHIZ LIMITEDらしいショーだったという声が多かったですね。パリの「colette」のサラさんもショーの直後に連絡をくれて、「すごい良かった」と言ってくれました。そして、早速うちのショールームに商品を見に来てくれて、オーダーしてくれました。

We held a runway show last March, celebrating our 15th anniversary, and we had been thinking this would be the last for the time being, so this opportunity came to a surprise for us, and to be quite honest, it was a difficult decision. After careful consideration, we decided to make the presentation with a different mind than our past shows at the Fashion Week. Since we are a brand based in Harajuku, we decided to show a presentation befitting our location, using, for example, street musicians and young Japanese attracting attention lately as models, instead of professionals and/or foreign models. As a result, we received word from many people that it was the most WHIZ LIMITED-like show we ever did. Ms. Sarah of ‘colette’ in Paris, contacted us right after the show to tell us “it was really great”. She immediately came to our showroom to look at our items, and even placed an order.

海外での展示を経験したことで、自分が日本人、アジア人であるということを強く意識させられましたし、それがインスピレーションソースとなり、クリエーションにも反映されました。ビジネスに関しては、正直まだまだわからないことばかりですが、「showroom.tokyo」に参加してみて、やみくもに展示を続けるだけでは現地のバイヤーを本気にさせることは難しいということを強く感じました。例えば、TOKYO FASHION AWARDの受賞者の中でグランプリを決めて、そのブランドがパリのファッション・ウィークでランウェイショーを行うなど、もっと積極的な発信をしていくことで注目度を高めていくということをしても良いのではないかと思いました。

By experiencing an overseas exhibition, it made me strongly aware that I am a Japanese, an Asian, and that awareness became an inspiration source, which is reflected in my creations. As for business, to be honest, there’s still so much I don’t know yet, but having participated in “showroom.tokyo”, I strongly feel that simply continuing overseas exhibitions blindly, is not enough to impress local buyers. I think it might be a good idea, for example, for Grand prix winning brands of the TOKYO FASHION AWARD to be given a chance to do a runway show at the Paris Fashion Week or something, to aggressively appeal and gather local attention.

今後の展望について教えて下さい。Please tell us of your future plans.

海外でのビジネスは、特に場所を限定せず、チャンスがあれば引き続き取り組みたいです。今回パリで展示をした時の感覚は、東京で初めてショーをした頃と似ているように感じます。当時もショーを4シーズン続けたことで、それがブランドにとってどんな意味があるのか見えてきたところがあったので、「showroom.tokyo」に関しても、来年の2シーズンも継続することで、海外でのビジネスの仕方などをもう少し知りたいですね。

As for business overseas, as long as I have a chance, I intend to continue challenging, without limiting to any particular place. I think that the sensations I felt at the Paris showroom this time, are similar to the sensations I felt when I held my first show in Tokyo. Back then, I learned the value of shows for our brand by holding shows for four consecutive seasons, so for the “showroom.tokyo”, by continuing again for another two seasons next year, I hope I’ll be able to get a stronger feel for business overseas.

他のコンテストやアワードに応募したことがないので詳しいことは分かりませんが、第一線で活躍されているリアルなバイヤーの方が審査員になられているところが、他のコンテストなどとの違いかと思いました。

I have never applied to any other award so I can’t say for sure, but I think that perhaps, the fact that the judges are active buyers, is different from other awards.

気負うことなく、いつも通り進化していくことを目標にチャレンジしていきたいと思います。

My aim is to keep challenging, keep evolving in my usual pace, without becoming overly eager. And, since I have been blessed with this precious chance, I will work hard to create cloths that will bare definite results.

「賞」とは無縁なブランドだと思っていたので、選んで頂いたことに少し驚いています。
いつも物作りを支えてくれている、生地メーカー、縫製工場、取引先各社に感謝の気持ちで一杯です。

We feel extremely honored to receive such an award. We thought that our brand was one that would have nothing to do with ‘awards’, so we are a bit surprised, being chosen. We are filled with appreciation towards the textile makers, sawing factories, and all our companies that always support us.

世界中には、さまざまなアワードがありますが、TFAはどのようなアワードだと思いますか。There are many different types of awards around the world. What type of award is the TFA to you?

ブランドにとって、賞を頂いて終わりではなくて、その後の海外でのビジネスを後押しすることが目的になっていることがとても魅力的です。
グローバルに一線で活躍しているバイヤーが審査員だという点も素晴らしいと思います。
受賞ブランドが、結果を出して評価を上げていくことでますます価値のあるアワードになっていくのではないでしょうか。

The attraction of this award is that, winning it is not the goal, but rather a start in getting supportive backup to develop business overseas. And it is fabulous that the judges consists of globally active buyers. As the awarded brands go out into the world and achieve results, I think that the value of this award too, will arise along with them.

and wanderらしい機能の追求と、デザイン性、アウトドアウエアの新しい提案を世界に向けて発信していければと思っています。
国内での展開と同じく、アウトドアマーケット、ファッションマーケットそれぞれから評価をされるブランドを目指していきたいと思います。
今まで以上に商品を多くの方に見て頂ける機会を活かせるよう、日々確実に物作りを積み重ねていきたいと思います。
地に足をつけてしっかりと海外でのセールスを継続させていくことが大事だと思っています。

The theme of ‘and wander’ is the pursuit of function and design in outdoor wear. We hope to continue introducing such new outdoor wear to the world. Our aim is to become a brand which is appreciated by both the outdoor market and the fashion market. In order to have more people actually see our products, we will work hard, and we feel that it is important to be down to earth in oversea sales.

まず1月のパリのショールームが始まる前に海外メディア、海外のSHOP関係に自らアクションを起こし、より多くの方々に来て頂ける努力をしようと思います。
そして、必ず結果を出せるよう頑張るのみです。

First, before the Paris showroom starts in January, I intend to do my best in approaching overseas medias and overseas shops myself, in order to have as many people as possible to come to the showroom. And, the rest is, to do my best to achieve results.

私たちのようなファクトリーブランドがこのようなファッションの分野でアワードを受賞したケースは珍しく、とても嬉しく思います。

It is rare that a factory brand, such as ourselves, have won such an award, and so it is a great honor. Fashion has become so diversified, with so much variety in the forms of brands and their backbones. I would like to introduce to the world, our unique production process, backed by our sure creative experience.

審査員が現在、活躍されているバイヤー陣という点が新しいと感じます。
また、受賞ブランドには海外販路開拓を目的としたショールームを開設、支援するという流れがビジネスにもつながる点で非常に有意義なアワードであると思います。
受賞者にもビジネスとしての結果を残すという意識が持てるため今後も継続して欲しいと考えます。

I think, the concept of having presently active buyers judge the award, is new and original. And, this award supporting the awarded brands to open an overseas showroom in order to develop international sales channels is very significant. It also makes the awardee aware that they must show results as a business, and therefore I hope that this award will continue.

貴重なこのチャンスを生かすために、ウィメンズ中心のブランドだが一部メンズにも挑戦してブランドの新しい可能性を試してみたいと考えています。
また、自らも海外の既存取引先や営業をしているところをショールームに呼んで、ビジネスとしての結果も意識していきたい。

Since we have been blessed with this precious chance, although we are a women’s wear brand, we intend to challenge ourself to include some men’s wear, to seek new possibilities for the brand. Also, we intend to invite existing overseas business connections to the showroom, and consciously stimulate business, in order to achieve results.

The fact that the panel of judges consists of famous buyers, who travel around the world looking for marketable cloths and items, and judges, not only for design, but also on the balance of business and creativity, makes this an extremely rare and valuable opportunity.

新たなステージに挑戦できることが何より嬉しく、その気持ちをクリエーション、ビジネス共に反映させることが責務だと考えます。

I can’t tell you how happy I am to be able to challenge this new stage, and I feel it is my responsibility to reflect and fully utilize these feelings in both my creations and business.

世界中には、さまざまなアワードがありますが、TFAはどのようなアワードだと思いますか。There are many different types of awards around the world. What type of award is the TFA to you?

現役のバイヤーさんに洋服を見ていただきリアルな評価をされ受賞できるところがTFAの面白さかなと思います。

In my opinion, what makes TFA unique is that, applicants are judged by active buyers, and are awarded based on realistic appraisals.

パリのショールームでの発表に向けて、意気込みをお願いいたします。Can we catch a bit of your enthusiasm looking towards the announcement at the Paris Showroom?

ブランド設立16年目にまた新しい挑戦ができることを楽しみながら経験だけで終わらせないように結果も大事にしていきたいと思います。

I would like to fully enjoy this new challenge that I’ve been blessed with in the 16th anniversary of this brand, but also commit to showing results, so it does not end as an experience.

服づくりにおいては、どんな部分に力を入れましたか。What aspects did you focus on when crafting your clothes?

普段と大きく何かを変えたということはありませんでしたが、パリで発表ができるということもあり、かなり気持ちは高まっていました。また、国内で展示会をする時は、シーズンテーマに合わせて空間づくりをしていますが、今回は現地に行ってみるまで会場の雰囲気が分からず、その中でいかに自分たちの持ち味を発揮していくのかということが課題になりました。日本に比べて発表の時期がかなり早く、1回目のショールームでは追い付けなかったところもありましたが、2回目については、1回目の反省をしっかりと生かす意識で臨みました。

I did not make any significant modifications, but I was very excited about presenting my work in Paris. When I hold exhibitions in Japan, I arrange the spatial design in a manner that corresponds to seasonal themes, but I didn’t have information on the tone of the venue until I went to the site. So the challenge we confronted was how to make the most out of our qualities amid these limitations. The timing for the presentation is considerably early compared to Japan, and this made us run out of time in the first showroom. But we approached the second showroom bearing in mind to reflect upon the previous event.

来場者からの反応はいかがでしたか。How did visitors react?

自分たちでも予想していた部分ではありましたが、しっかり見ていただけるバイヤーと、スルーされてしまうバイヤーが非常にハッキリと分かれていました。それでも、より多くの専門家たちに足を運んでいただけたことは非常に良かったと思います。また今回、特にアジアのバイヤーの反応が強く、世界中のどのエリアで、どう浸透してきているかということを感じることもできました。これまでも海外のショップからの問い合わせに対しては、ルックの全身ややディテールの写真データなどを送って対応していたのですが、そうした人たちに実際に洋服を見ていただいたことで取引につながったケースもありましたし、今回の展示を通してブランドの存在を知ったというショップもだいぶ増えたと思います。

As we expected, we saw a distinct difference among the buyers; some looked carefully at our items, while others did not show interest at all. But still, having a number of professionals visiting our exhibition was a great experience. The exhibition gathered a strong response from Asia-based buyers in particular. This enabled us to see how our clothes are taking root, and also in what areas around the world. We have been responding to inquiries from shops abroad by sending whole-body looks or photo data of details, but having these people look at our clothes first hand resulted in business deals in some cases. I also think many shops discovered our brand through this exhibition.

今年3月のMercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2015-16 A/Wで行った凱旋ショーには、どのような意識で臨みましたか。This March, you presented a come-back show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2015-16 A/W. What kind of mindset did you have for this event?

東京のファッション・ウィークという公式の場で、自分たちらしさをしっかり表現するということを意識しました。洋服自体はパリのショールームで見せていたこともあり、ショーについては新しい形で見せたいと考え、クリエーションを通して連絡を取り合っていたスウェーデンのミュージシャンたちを招き、ライブインスタレーションという形式で発表しました。自分としては、洋服を通じて彼らを日本に呼べたことに大きな意味を感じていますし、アーティストとの関係性の中で空間をつくり出すことで、それまでの過程も全て含めて、今、自分たちのファッションではこういうことが当たり前、ということを伝えたいと思いました。ショーを終えてさまざまな反響がありましたが、評価してくれた仲間たちもたくさんいて、とても良かったです。

What I had in mind was to fully present the brand’s identity at Tokyo’s fashion week, which is a very formal event. The brand already presented our clothes at the showroom in Paris, so I wanted to take a different approach for the fashion week show. This is why I invited the Swedish musicians who I’ve been interacting through my creations, and showcased my work in a live installation format. It was meaningful how I managed to call the band to Japan while having fashion serve as a go-between. Also by creating a space that embodies the brand’s relationship with the artist, we wanted to communicate what the norm of fashion is for us now, including the entire process that we went through. Mixed responses were heard after the show, but I was glad that many of my friends highly regarded our presentation.

今後の展望についてお聞かせ下さい。Please share with us your future plans.

パリでの2回のショールームを経験し、やはり3回、4回と引き続きこの場所で発表していきたいという思いを強くしました。今回は展示会やファッション・ウィーク関連のパーティなど外でも多くの人たちとコミュニケーションを取ることができ、やはり世界中からファッション関係者が集まるパリは凄いということを感じましたし、その中でどんどん自分の可能性を広げていきたいと考えています。もちろん、今回のような展示会だけではなく、いつかショーやインスタレーションができる機会をパリでつくれればと思っています。

After experiencing two showrooms in Paris, I now have renewed hopes to present my work here on an ongoing basis for the third or fourth time. This showroom offered me the opportunity to communicate with many people both at the exhibition and at outside events including fashion week-related parties. I saw how extraordinary Paris was with how the people in the fashion industry gathered from around the world, and I would like to expand the range of my possibilities here. Going beyond exhibitions, I hope to someday have the opportunity to host shows and installations at Paris.

服づくりにおいては、どんな部分に力を入れましたか。What aspects did you focus on when crafting your clothes?

発表の場が日本でも海外でも、つくるもの自体は同じで、特に今回変えた部分というのはありませんでした。自分が常に念頭に置いているのは、ストリートやモードなどのジャンルを意識することなく、表現したいテーマに対して、「即興演奏」というブランド名の由来の通り、予期せぬ要素を混ぜ合わせながらオリジナルの空気感を生み出していくことです。自分ができる範囲というのは決まっているので、生地屋さんや縫製工場さんなど、色々な人たちと関わっていく中で、バンドのような服づくりをしていきたいと考えています。

Regardless of where sulvam is presenting, be it Japan or overseas, the clothes that I create remains consistent and I did not change anything in particular for the showroom. What I always keep in mind is to keep my thoughts away from street, mode, or other fashion genres. By staying true to the brand name “sulvam,” which refers to improvisation, I blend unlooked-for elements and develop an original quality for the theme that I seek to portray. My abilities are limited, so I want to create clothes in a band-like process through interacting with drapers, sewing factories, and many other people.

来場者からの反応はいかがでしたか。How did visitors react?

1回目のショールームは、多くのバイヤーにコレクションを見てもらう良い機会にはなりましたが、結果としては、着やすさなど販売のことを意識し過ぎたところがあったためか芳しくありませんでした。海外のバイヤーの反応を見ていると、純粋にクリエーションに向き合ってくれる方が多いように感じましたので、2回目のショールームでは、“これでダメなら仕方ない”という思いで、自分がやりたいことを無心で表現しました。その結果、バイヤーの反応は非常に良くなり、新しい取引先も決まりました。自分に素直につくったものが受け入れられた感覚があったし、今後もこうしたスタンスでやっていくことが大切だということを強く感じました。

The first exhibition was a good opportunity to present my collection to many different buyers, but it did not turn out well, presumably because I put excessive focus on wearability and other sales-related aspects. Looking at the reactions of overseas buyers, I noticed that many of them responded squarely to the brand’s creations. So in the second showcase, I devoted myself to portraying my ideas and made all-out efforts not to leave any regrets. This, as a result, remarkably improved the reactions from buyers, and I even managed to gain a new client. I felt that my straightforward creations were accepted, and this experience gave me a strong awareness on how important it is to maintain this approach.

今年3月のMercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2015-16 A/Wで行った凱旋ショーには、どのような意識で臨みましたか。This March, you presented a come-back show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2015-16 A/W. What kind of mindset did you have for this event?

最初の段階では、金銭的な部分なども含め、正直不安の方が大きかったです。自分としては、演出はあまり入れずに、つくった洋服を、モデル、音、空間だけのシンプルな要素で見せたかったので、ランウェイショーという形になりましたが、決まってからはスタッフの皆さんのサポートで一気に進んでいき、無事ショーを行うことができました。出てくれたモデルたちもまたショーに参加したいと言ってくれていますし、来場者も楽しんでくれたようなので、今後もできる限りランウェイでの発表は続けていきたいと考えています。また、東京のファッション・ウィークという場でショーをしたことによって、ブランドの存在が認知されたということも大きかったと感じています。

I initially had a lot of worries including financial aspects. I decided to present my creations as a runway show hoping to showcase my clothes with simple elements ? space, sound, and models. With the support from staff members, preparations gained momentum once I decided on the plans, and the show ended as a success. The models that took part in the show said that they would want to participate again, and the visitors seemed to have enjoyed our brand’s show as well, so I would like to continue on with runway presentations as much as possible. Delivering a show in Tokyo’s fashion week also raised the profile of my brand, and I think this was an important step.

今後の展望についてお聞かせ下さい。Please share with us your future plans.

もし仮に、TFAを受賞していなければ、これまで通り国内でコレクションを発表し、自力で営業をしていたと思います。そのサイクルの中で、どうしても国内のショップやお客さまに売りやすいアイテムをつくっていかざるを得ない部分があって、これはスタートしたばかりのブランドが一様に抱えている課題だと感じています。今回は、幸いにもこうして海外で発表することができ、自分のコレクションは“これなんだ！”ということをストレートに表現できたことは、ブランドにとって非常に大きな経験になりました。今後の課題としては、何よりも継続していくということで、どんな形であろうと次回もパリにコレクションを持っていかないといけないと考えているところです。

If my brand hadn’t been awarded with TFA, I think I would be presenting my collection now within Japan as before, and engaging in sales activities by myself. This cycle would force me to create items that are well-accepted by shops and clients in Japan, which is an issue confronted by all newly launched brands. I was lucky enough to present my works abroad, and managed to showcase a solid idea of what my collection is about; this was an extremely meaningful experience for the brand. My first and foremost issue for the future is to work to maintain my efforts, and I am planning to take my collection to Paris at all costs.

服づくりにおいては、どんな部分に力を入れましたか。What aspects did you focus on when crafting your clothes?

最初のショールームは、受賞後からの日程がタイトだったこともあり、ファセッタズムの特徴的なアイテムをリバイバルするような形で提案しました。2回目に関しては、ミラノでのショーも決まっていたので、全て新作でつくりましたが、特に海外ということを意識することなく、いつも通りに、自分たちがいまやりたいことを表現しました。自分たちは、日本においても、海外においても、どこにも属さないオリジナルな存在でいたいと常に考えていて、そのためにしなければいけないことを追求しています。

As the schedule for the first showroom was quite tight after receiving the award, we made a proposal that was somewhat of a revival of FACETASM's distinctive items. For the second time, as the show in Milan was also decided, we went with all newly made items. However, we didn't do anything different because the announcement was overseas, we wanted to express ourselves as we always do, and do what we want to do now. We have always wanted to be an original existence that does not belong to anywhere, whether in Japan or overseas, and we are pursuing what we need to do in order to accomplish this.

来場者からの反応はいかがでしたか。How did visitors react?

さまざまな国、人種の方にお越しいただいたので、捉え方はさまざまで、一概にはなんとも言えない部分がありますが、日本での反応と同様に、ストリートとモードの中間という見方をされる方が多かったと思います。また、6月の展示会の時は、すでに2回目ということもあり、ブランドの名前をすでに知っている方が増えていたように感じました。これまでのように東京のショーや展示会で発表するケースに比べると、パリではバイヤーもまだバジェットを豊富に持っている段階なので熱量の違いを感じたし、実際に新規取引先も増えました。もちろん、東京が発表の場として良くないということではないのですが、海外に挑戦するということを考えると、やはり海外のファッション・ウィークのスケジュールに合わせていかないと難しい部分があるのではないかと感じました。

People from many different countries and races came to the show, and the show was perceived in many different ways. Therefore, the reaction wasn’t all the same, but was somewhat similar to that in Japan, meaning there were many people who view the brand between street and mode. Also, since the exhibition in June was the second time, I felt that there were more people who already knew the name of the brand. As with up until now, when comparing the cases of announcements at the Tokyo show and exhibition, I felt a difference in the amount of passion since buyers in Paris still have a large amount of their budget available, and we were actually able to increase our business partners. Of course, it's not that Tokyo is a bad location to have an announcement, but when considering challenging overseas, I felt that it is difficult if the schedule doesn't match that of overseas.

これまでも東京でショーを発表し続けてきましたし、VERSUS TOKYOのようなイベントにも参加していたので、特に普段と変わった部分はありませんでした。今回の東京でのショーが評価され、ジョルジオ・アルマーニ氏からのオファーで、ミラノのファッション・ウィーク中にランウェイショーを行うという機会をいただくことができました。依頼を受けてから発表までの時間は非常に短かったのですが、パリの展示会に向けてコレクションはつくっていたので、それをベースにショーのためのアイテムを追加していきました。すべてが初めてのことだったのでとても大変でしたが、海外の多くの方に、日本のブランドやスタイルを知っていただけたことは大きかったですし、その役割を自分たちが担えたことを非常に光栄に感じています。

As we have continued to announce shows up until now in Tokyo and have participated in events such as VERSUS TOKYO, there wasn't anything in particular that was changed. In response to the high evaluation of the show in Tokyo this time, we were able to get the opportunity to do a runway show during Fashion Week in Milan thanks to an offer from Mr. Giorgio Armani. Although the time after receiving the request up to the announcement was extremely short, because we had been making the collection aimed at the exhibition in Paris, we added items for the show based on that. Although it was quite hectic because it was the first time to do everything, it was huge that we were able to show off Japanese brands and styles to many people overseas, and I feel much honored to have had this role.

今後の展望についてお聞かせ下さい。Please share with us your future plans.

今、東京のファッションは世界から注目されているという話はよく耳にしていましたが、実際に海外で発表したことで、まだまだ何も知られていないということを痛感しました。同時に、今回のTOKYO FASHION AWARDで、受賞ブランドが発表したような日本のファッションというものを、より明確に世界に打ち出していかないといけないという強い危機感を持ちました。ブランドとしては、なかなか得られないチャンスを与えていただいたと感じていますし、この機会をしっかり活かしていかなければ挑戦した意味がなくなってしまうので、今後はさらに海外展開に力を入れていきたいと考えています。

Although recently it is often said that Tokyo fashion is attracting much attention from the world, I was keenly aware after making an actual announcement abroad that Tokyo fashion is still not well known. At the time same, with this TOKYO FASHION AWARD, I felt compelled that we must set out Japanese fashion, such as that announced by the winning brands, in a more clear manner to the world. As a brand, I feel that we were given a chance that is not easily attainable, and if we don't take firm advantage of this opportunity we will lose the meaning for challenging in the first place. Therefore, we hope to focus our efforts from now on to further overseas expansion.

服づくりにおいては、どんな部分に力を入れましたか。What aspects did you focus on when crafting your clothes?

ニューヨークでの経験を踏まえ、価格設定やサイズ展開など、海外マーケットを意識しました。2015年1月に行われた最初のショールームに関しては、2014年10月のTFA2015 受賞発表から期間が短かったこともあり、デニムをはじめ定番的なアイテムを中心にしたコンパクトなコレクションを持って行きました。ファクトタムのベースであるシンプルでベーシックなリアルクローズという部分は崩したくないという思いがありましたが、1回目のショールームではシンプルにまとめすぎてしまったことから、海外ではもっとインパクトが強いアイテムも必要だというアドバイスをいただきました。それを受け、2回目の展示では、染めや刺繍など日本らしい技術を活かした生地などをつくっていきました。

Based on our experience in New York, we were conscious of the overseas market, such as pricing and size expansion. For our first showroom held in January, 2015, the period from the award announcement of TFA 2015 in October 2014 was short, so we decided to go with a compact collection which focused on classic items, including denim. We didn't want to break the simple and basic "real clothing" base of FACTOTUM. However, because our first showroom had been summarized too simply, we received advice that we needed to have items with a stronger impact overseas. In response to this advice, we made cloths that took advantage of techniques with a Japanese sense, such as dying and embroidery, for our second exhibition.

来場者からの反応はいかがでしたか。How did visitors react?

海外での発表ということを意識し、日本らしいファブリックやカラーのアイテムを展開しましたが、海外のバイヤーたちには、ファブリックや縫製における「メイド・イン・ジャパン」というものを、とてもポジティブに捉えていただいたと感じています。また、こちらの思惑通り、2回目に発表した刺繍や染めのアイテムがピックアップされるなど、1回目以上に手応えを感じることができました。ニューヨークに進出した時は、価格の高さを指摘されることが多かったのですが、今回に関しては、あまりその部分を気にし過ぎず、見る人の印象に残るものをつくることが、良い反応につながっていくという実感がありました。パリでは、世界中から集まったバイヤーが、膨大な数のブランドを短期間で見て回るということもあり、やはりファースト・インプレッションが非常に大切になりますし、仮に言葉が通じなくても、こちらの意図が伝わるような洋服をしっかりつくっていかないといけないなと思いました。

Conscious that we were making an announcement overseas, we deployed items using fabrics and colors with a Japanese feel to them, and I feel that our buyers overseas very positively received the "Made in Japan" sense given off in our fabrics and sewing. In addition, as we had expected, the embroidery and dyed items from the second announcement were picked up, allowing for us to be able to feel a greater response than the first time. During our expansion in New York, the height of the price was often pointed out. However, this time we decided not to worry too much about that part, and in turn we had the feeling that creating something memorable to the beholder would lead to a good reaction. In Paris, buyers gathered from all across the globe have to look at an astounding number of brands in a short period of time, showing that once again first impressions are extremely important. Even if the language can't be understood, I thought that we have to do our best to make clothing that is capable of conveying our intentions.

今年3月のMercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2015-16 A/Wで行った凱旋ショーには、どのような意識で臨みましたか。This March, you presented a come-back show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2015-16 A/W. What kind of mindset did you have for this event?

1月の時点で、すでにパリでの展示を終えていたこともあり、東京でのショーに関しては、いつもとは少し違う感覚がありました。ショールームに参加したメンバーが同じ日にショーやインスタレーションを発表するということもあり、どこかお祭り的な感覚がありましたし、終わった後の達成感も得られました。当日は、参加ブランドのみんなと打ち上げをしたのですが、そこで色々な話をすることができました。今回の受賞6ブランドは、それぞれ方向性やデザイナーのキャラクターが異なりますが、とてもバランスが取れていましたし、東京ではあまり会う機会がないメンバーが一定期間集まって、時間を共に過ごしたことは良い経験になりました。また、学生の時のように、みんなで集まって何かをするという感覚を思い出すこともできて、非常に楽しかったです。

Since we had already finished the exhibition in Paris when January came around, we had slightly different feelings regarding the show in Tokyo. Members participating in the showroom all announce their shows and installations on the same day, giving a somewhat festival-like sense. We also left with a sense of accomplishment after it ended. We had a party with everyone from the participating brands on the day of the show, and were able to hear a variety of different stories there. The characters of the designers from the six brands awarded this time are all completely different. However, there was a good sense of balance, and the members who don't have many opportunities to get together in Tokyo gathered together to spend a bit of time together, which turned into a good experience. On top of this, I was able to remember what it was like as a student to gather everyone together to do something, which was extremely fun.

今後の展望についてお聞かせ下さい。Please share with us your future plans.

今回を良い機会に、海外展開にはさらに力を入れていきたいと考えています。パリでは、さまざまなショールームや合同展示会などを見る機会があったのですが、色々な展示を見ていく中で、ブランドの個性というものを自分たちが納得できる形で見せていくことの大切さを感じましたし、ビジネスチャンスもそこから広がっていくのではないかと思いました。今後も、ファクトタムとしての軸はブラさずに、日本らしい繊細なものづくりを通して、海外の人たちにインパクトを与えられるような洋服を継続的につくっていければと考えています。

With the good opportunity this time around, we hope to further focus on our overseas expansion. In Paris, we were able to have the opportunity to see various showrooms and joint exhibitions. Among these various exhibitions, we felt the importance of showing off the individuality of a brand in a way that makes sense for ourselves, and I believe that business opportunities will spread from there. In the future we would like to continue to make clothing to impact people overseas through the delicate manufacturing unique to Japan, without blurring from the axis of FACTOTUM.

服づくりにおいては、どんな部分に力を入れましたか。What aspects did you focus on when crafting your clothes?

特に1回目のショールームについては準備時間が短く、スケジュール面で厳しいところがあり、新作はあまり持って行けなかったのですが、過去に発表した「七福神」のシリーズなど象徴的なアイテムをお見せできたので、ブランドの世界観を知っていただく機会にはなったと思います。2回目のショールームでは、やはり新作の点数を増やすことが最大の課題でしたが、立ち上げてまもないリトゥン バイにおいて、慣れないスケジュール感の中でどこまでできるのか不安を抱えながら、必死につくっていきましたね。

The preparation period for the showrooms, in particular the first one, was quite short with a tight schedule, so we were unable to bring many new works. However, we were able to show "THE SEVEN GODS" series that we had announced in the past, which became an opportunity for people to get to know the world of the brand. For the second showroom, our biggest challenge was to increase the number of new items. Among the unfamiliar schedule of "written by," which had just launched, we did everything we could to make products, anxious about just how much we could get completed.

来場者からの反応はいかがでしたか。How did visitors react?

1回目は、異色のブランドとして認知していただけたとは思いますが(笑)、なにしろアイテムの点数が少なかったので、面白いけどよく分からないという印象を持たれた方がほとんどだったと思います。ただ、コレットのサラ（アンデルマン）さんが展示を見てくれて、ショップのショーウインドウのデザインをやらないかと声をかけてくれて、非常に多くの方に見てもらうことができました。2回目には、リトゥン バイの新作を充分に持って行けましたが、日常で着られる洋服を目指す上でも、ちょっとしたニュアンスの部分にオリジナリティがあるということが非常に大切だと感じましたし、同時に、リトゥンアフターワーズとリトゥン バイの間に位置するような特別な日にドレスアップできる洋服を提案する必要性も実感しました。

For the first time, I think that we were able to be recognized as a unique brand (laughing). After all, since there were only a few items, I think most people walked away with the impression that it was interesting, but they didn't know what was going on. However, Sarah Andelman from Colette saw our exhibition and invited us to do the window design for the shop, which was seen by a large amount of people. Although we presented a sufficient amount of new items for "written by," we felt that it was very important to have a sense of originality in the slightly nuanced area when aiming for clothing that can be worn on a daily basis. At the same time, we realized the need for proposing clothing that can be dressed up in on special days, positioned somewhere in between "writtenafterwards" and "written by."

今年3月のMercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2015-16 A/Wで行った凱旋ショーには、どのような意識で臨みましたか。This March, you presented a come-back show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2015-16 A/W. What kind of mindset did you have for this event?

1月のパリに行った時は、ちょうどシャルリー・エブド事件の直後でした。事件現場のすぐそばのホテルに泊まっていて、当時の緊迫した空気を肌で感じながら、外部から来た日本人の自分に何ができるのかということを色々考えました。そして、3月の東京での凱旋イベントでは、それらを反映させた「地球」というテーマのショーを行いました。今回は特に老若男女さまざまな人たちに見ていただきたいという思いがあったのですが、ショーという形で発表できたことでさまざまな反応があり、結果的にとても良い機会になったと感じています。

When I went to Paris in January, it was immediately following the Charlie Hebdo incident. Staying at a hotel right next to the scene of the crime, I thought to myself while feeling the tense air at the time, "what can I do as a Japanese, somebody who came from the outside?" while feeling the tense air at the time. Following this, I incorporated these thoughts at the triumphal in Tokyo in March, holding a show with the theme of "Earth." This time around, I had the desire to be seen by men and women of all ages. We received a variety of reactions to having the announcement in the form of a show, and I think it became a very good opportunity as a result.

リトゥン バイについては、現在はメンズ寄りのユニセックスという形で展開していますが、今後はリトゥンアフターワーズとも連動しながら、よりターゲットを広げていきたいと考えています。今回の展示を通じて、自分たちが進むべき方向性はだいぶ見えてきたのですが、そこに向かうためにクリアすべき課題をひとつずつ乗り越えていくことの難しさを痛感しているところです。今後もパリで発表を続けたいという思いは強いのですが、世界で勝負していく上では、普通の洋服をつくっているだけではダメだということを実感したので、他のブランドにはない個性というものを、リトゥンアフターワーズの活動などを通して、より強く発信していきたいと考えています。

Although we are currently developing "written by" in a slightly-male unisex style, we would like to further expand the target while collaborating with "writtenafterwards" in the future as well. While we were able to largely get a feeling for the direction in which we should move forward through the exhibition this time, we are keenly aware of the difficulties to be faced in order to overcome each and every challenge in order to move forward in that direction. While our desire to continue our announcements as a brand in Paris in the future is strong, we realize that it's useless to just make ordinary clothing in order to challenge on a global scale. We would like to continue to strongly spread our unique individuality that can't be found in other brands through the activities of "writtenafterwards."

服づくりにおいては、どんな部分に力を入れましたか。What aspects did you focus on when crafting your clothes?

特に意識していつもと変えた部分はありませんでした。初めてパリに進出する際にも、特別何かを意識したということはありませんでしたし、常に自分が表現したいものをしっかりと出すという意識で臨んでいます。ただ、ジョンローレンスサリバンはテーラードがベースのブランドなので、日本人との体型やサイズ感の違いというものは服づくりに大きく影響します。その違いに対応するためのサイズやパターンの調整というのは、海外に出てきた当初に比べると、だいぶできるようになっていると思います。やはり海外で発表していく上では非常に重要になる部分ですし、自分たちとしても、ブランドの次のステップとして取り組んだ課題でした。

I remained consistent with my previous approaches. I did not make any special changes when my brand made its way into Paris either ?I just always try to carefully articulate the concept I have in mind. That being said, JOHN LAWRENCE SULLIVAN is a tailoring-based brand, which means our product-making is majorly impacted by figures or fits that differ from those of Japanese people. Compared to when we first advanced into non-Japanese markets, our ability to reshape sizes and patterns to address these differences has improved. The adjustments are critical in presenting our collection abroad, and this was an issue that we addressed as a next step forward for the brand.

来場者からの反応はいかがでしたか。How did visitors react?

今回は、「東京」という枠の中で6ブランドが参加しているということもあり、普段よりも多くの方々が足を運んでくれましたし、有名なセレクトショップのバイヤーなども結構来ていたと思います。反応という点では、やはりショップの特性によってさまざまで、それは国というよりはスタイルの違いによるものという印象を持っています。ただ、保守的なショップが増えている日本と比べると、海外では個性の強いアイテムを好むところが多いように感じます。メディアの状況なども影響していると思いますが、日本の場合はシンプルで着やすい服が好まれる一方、海外のバイヤーはショーやルックのビジュアルを気に入ってピックアップする方が多いですね。

With six brands taking part under the concept “Tokyo,” the collection attracted more people than usual, and a number of acclaimed multi-brand shop buyers dropped by as well. The reception varied by the characteristics of each shop, which I think was based on the variation in style rather than the country of which the brand was from. But I’ve noticed that compared to Japan, where the number of conservative-oriented shops is on the rise, markets abroad favor items with distinctive characteristics. This could be a result of circumstances associated with the media, but buyers in Japan prefer simple and easy-to-wear items whereas buyers abroad are often interested in visuals and looks from fashion shows.

今年3月のMercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2015-16 A/Wで行った凱旋ショーには、どのような意識で臨みましたか。This March, you presented a come-back show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2015-16 A/W. What kind of mindset did you have for this event?

1月の段階で洋服とビジュアルをパリで発表していたこともあり、すでに自分の中で完結していたものを改めて見せていくというのは、正直難しいところもありました。そのため、いつもパリで発表しているようなモデルが次々にキャットウォークを歩いていくオーソドックスなランウェイショーではなく、映像を用いるなど少し趣向を変えて発表することにしました。今回の見せ方をみなさんがどう評価していただいたかは分かりませんが、スタッフをはじめ自分たちのチームにとっては、いつもとは違う形を取ったことで、良い影響があったと感じています。

I presented the brand’s clothes and visuals in January, so I must admit that giving another showcase of something I already wrapped up was not an easy process. This is why instead of a standard runway show, like the ones we usually present in Paris where models take turns to walk down the catwalk, I used videos and took an unconventional approach. I don’t know how this presentation was received, but engaging in a different process made a positive effect on our staff and team.

今後の展望についてお聞かせ下さい。Please share with us your future plans.

また海外でのショーを再開したいと考えていて、場所はパリかロンドンでできると良いですね。今、海外のPRやショールームのチームを再編成しているところで、それが整備でき次第、また何かしらの形で発表を続けていく予定です。ブランドとしては、ショーをしてみたいというのが海外進出の動機の一つでもありますので、ショーを続けていく中で、その面白さをさらに感じるようになりました。今後も自分たちにしかできない特別なもので周りを驚かせるようなショーをしたいと考えていますし、これからもさまざまな部分でチャレンジしていきたいですね。

I am planning to join shows outside of Japan again, hopefully in Paris or London. The brand is rearranging overseas PR and showroom teams at the moment, and whatever the format might be, I would like to present our work once the teams are ready. One of the reasons why we made a foray into the international market is our brand’s aspiration to take part in fashion shows, and the more shows we participated in, the more we appreciated its appeal. We plan to organize eye-opening shows by harnessing our unique and special features, and we’re ready to take on challenges in many areas.

日本のブランドは世界に誇れるクリエーションのレベルの高さ、独自の世界観、斬新さを持っていると思います。その一方で、ファッションが文化として生活に根付いている海外都市に比べると、世界にチャレンジできる環境がまだ少ないのではと感じております。
TFAは、海外に発信し、ビジネスとして成功するためのきっかけとなる重要な役割だと思っております。

I believe that Japanese brands have their own unique originality and view of the world, as well as a high level of creation that can be boasted to the rest of the world. On the other hand, when compared to overseas cities that have fashion rooted in life as a part of culture, I feel that the environment capable of challenging on a global scale is still small. I believe that TFA plays an important role as an opportunity to send brands overseas and succeed as a business.

どのような点を重視して審査されますか。Points of Judgment (What types of points were emphasized when judging?)

まずはブランドとしての独自の世界観を持っているか、それをひと目で伝えるパワーを持っているか、そして何より「着てみたい、触れてみたい」と思わせるドキドキ・ワクワク感があるかを直感で捉えたいと思っています。
それから、海外より期待されている縫製や素材といった日本ならではのモノづくりへのこだわりや技術の部分も見たいです。

First of all, I would like to intuitively capture whether or not a unique view of the world as a brand is present, if the brand has the power to convey that with a single glance, and more than anything else, if the brand gives off the feeling of excitement and thrill that makes you "want to touch and wear it."
In addition to that, I am also interested in seeing the commitment to manufacturing and techniques unique to Japan that have come to be expected from people overseas, such as stitching and materials.

TFAを通して海外で活躍する日本ブランドが増えれば、日本国内におけるファッションビジネスもさらに活性化すると思います。TFA受賞ブランドが将来的に世界のファッションを牽引していく姿を楽しみにしております。

If the number of Japanese brands playing an active role overseas increases through the TFA, I believe that the fashion business within Japan will also be further stimulated. I'm looking forward to seeing TFA winning brands leading global fashion in the future.

昨年の活動を拝見し、受賞ブランドが海外で展示会を行い、実際に海外店舗との取組がスタートしているという点において非常に有用性の高いアワードだと感じました。
「経験に関係なくエントリーを募集し、選ばれたら実際に海外で商品を展示することができる。」というのは、すごくシンプルでブランドにとってはメリットが多そうですが、実際の海外ビジネスと同じ環境を即座に与えられるという面ではシビアとも受け取ることができます。
（※他のアワードでは賞金が出たり、小売店での販売が約束されることが多いのでは）
そういった意味でも、ファッションビジネスの本質を捉えた数少ないアワードだと思います。

After seeing last year's activities, with the winning brands performing exhibitions abroad and actually beginning initiatives together with overseas shops, I truly felt that this is a highly useful award. While the concept of "Applying regardless of experience and actually winning the chance to exhibit products abroad if chosen" may be quite simple, and offer many obvious benefits for brands, it is also severe to set up the business immediately in the same environment as actual overseas business.
(*As other awards often give out prizes or give the promise of retail sales) In that sense, I think that it's one of the few awards that capture the true essence of the fashion business.

どのような点を重視して審査されますか。Points of Judgment (What types of points were emphasized when judging?)

・海外ブランドにも引けをとらないブランドのアイデンティティを感じるか。
・モノ作りの面で素晴らしいか。
（素材、パターン、縫製などがよく、かつ価格とのバランスが適正か）
・ベストなクリエーションを継続的に発表できるポテンシャルがあるか。
現状では上記のようなポイントが思い浮かびますが、実際のアワードでは私自身が新しい価値観を勉強させていただくことになるのではと思っています。

・If it is a brand that is not outdone by even foreign brands, and gives off a sense of brand identity.
・If it is excellent from manufacturing terms.
(If materials, patterns, and sewing techniques, etc., are done well, and if the balance with cost is appropriate or not)
・If the brand shows potential to continuously announce the best creations.
The above points are what come to my mind currently, but I expect to learn of new values when the actual award comes around.

I expect a wonderful award such as the TFA and the power of participating brands to raise the value of fashion originating from Japan to even greater heights around the world.
As the Paris Collection and New York Collection have reached a level of national culture, I think it is important for the Japan Collection as well, to steadily carve its place out in history through such activities.

Honestly, I think that almost all contests and events do not lead to business, especially in Japan. Although the TFA just started, I believe it is a true award. Therefore, when I was selected to receive the award, I felt a great honor and sense of appreciation.

I think that this type of a trend is an extremely good flow for brands. For those who aspire to work in fashion in the future, these sorts of opportunities can become great motivations. In particular, because the brand is reviewed by prominent real buyers for the TFA, it is an award that has a good balance between creation and business.

As a winning brand of the commemoratory first TFA, I want to leave a strong result as a representative of Japan. Also, I think that this is merely a starting point. I think the largest challenge is continuing on and linking to further business opportunities. I would like to take the Paris Showroom as an opportunity to aim for the next stage.

writtenafterwardsとして2007年から活動をしておりますが、今年の4月から、新しくベーシックラインとしてwritten byを立ち上げました。writtenafterwardsを軸としながら、まずは日本をベースにビジネスを拡大する事が第一目標ですが、海外にもしっかりアピール出来る場として今回の受賞は弊社にとって、大変重要な機会となる事と思います。ありがとうございました。

I am extremely happy about this award. Although we have been active since 2007 as writtenafterwards, we launched written by as a new basic line in April this year. Centering on the principles of writtenafterwards, the first goal was to expand business based in Japan. This award is an extremely important opportunity for us, as it establishes a place in which we can firmly appeal the brand overseas as well. Thank you very much.

I was a little surprised, because I think that a brand such as ours is unlikely to be selected in the current fashion scene in Japan.

第一回のコンテストなのでまだよくは分かりませんが、受賞ブランドをみる限り、他のコンテストに比べ、審査員の個性が面白く反映されてると思います。

Although I'm not quite sure yet because it is still the first contest, as far as I can tell from looking at the winning brands, the personalities of the judges are reflected in an interesting manner compared to other contests.

継続してパリでは発表しているので、特に強く意気込んではいませんが、パリでのセールスの難しさを経験している分、今回のサポートを生かして、今までと変わらず、決して保守的になることなく、より強い発表をして成果を出したいと思っています。

As this won't be the first presentation for us in Paris, I am not particularly worried about anything. Having experienced the difficulties of sales in Paris, I would like to take advantage of the support this time around, continue the same trend of never becoming conservative, and have a stronger presentation to produce some results.

・パリでは展示会をされていない新鋭ブランドであること。
・物作り（素材や縫製も含めて）がしっかりしているかどうか。
・トレンドをおさえ、お客様にとって魅力的なブランドであるかどうか。
以上3つのポイントです。

・A fresh brand that had not done an exhibit in Paris.
・Solid manufacturing (including the textile and the sewing).
・A brand that has captured the trend and is attractive to customers.

私は、海外で発表し活躍する新進デザイナーをリサーチしたり、新規導入する際には、海外での世界的なコンテストの受賞歴を参考の１つにしています。日本人デザイナーのクリエーションや斬新さというのは海外のショールームで会話をしていても、特別視され、期待されていると感じることも少なくありません。TFAには、そういった日本人デザイナーを発掘したいと思っている海外マーケットへ最新の日本のマーケット情報を発信する非常に重要な役割を担うアワードだと思います。

I have been researching young designers who have been presenting and doing well overseas. While introducing somebody new, I take into account whether or not they have received any awards in international contests. Many times, when you engage in a conversation in a showroom overseas, the creations or originality of Japanese designers are regarded with as being exceptional and expectations for them are very high. The TFA is an award that assumes the extremely important role of providing information about the latest Japanese market to the overseas market that wants to discover such Japanese designers.

一次審査においては、商品ではなく過去のカタログや写真を拝見しての選考でしたので、まずはそちらを拝見して伝わってくるブランドの世界観・オリジナリティを感じ、この商品を見てみたい！と思えるかという直感をまずは大切にしました。その次に、細かくテーマを読み、ファブリックやデザイン、スタイリングの独創性、コレクションまたは写真構成の印象などを重視しました。

During the initial screening, the selection was done observing past catalogs and photos instead of viewing the actual product. I first gave more importance to instinct, trying to feel the perspective of the world and the originality of the brand that was brought on through the catalogs and photos, and tried to see if I felt that I would like to take a look at the actual product. Then, I read the theme in detail, and placed emphasis on the creativity and originality of the fabric, design and styling and the overall impression of the collection or the portfolio.

今回、メンズ・レディース・雑貨と自身の担当しているカテゴリーを越えてエントリーブランドを拝見して思ったことですが、これから海外へ東京ブランドを広めていくためには、言うまでも無く、そのブランドが他にはない強みを持ち、いかにそれを押し出して訴求できるかが、一番の鍵になると思います。そのためには、ブランド側には、まず一目で見た時に「ブランドの強みが何か」を相手に訴えかけられる訴求力が必要であり、TFAはそのブランドの魅力をさらに後押しするプロモーションが必要だと思います。今回受賞される方々が海外のマーケットで多くの人々の目に留まり、海外で広く活躍されることを期待しております。また、そういったデザイナーを発信するTFAが海外でも評価され、TFAで受賞歴のあるブランドが常に注目を浴びる様になればと思っております。

This time, I went beyond the men’s, women’s, goods categories and the categories that I was in charge of, and looked at the brands that had entered the contest. I felt that in order to spread the Tokyo brand overseas from now on, it goes without saying that the brand should have a competitive edge like no other brand. Also, bringing this strength to the forefront and appealing it will be the key factor. For that, the brand needs to have an appealing power such that the moment someone looks at it "the forte of the brand" should appeal to that person. I think TFA needs promotion to further boost the appeal of a brand. Those who will win the award this time will catch the eyes of a lot of people in the overseas market, and will be expected to succeed overseas. Also, TFA, which provides such designers, is expected to be recognized overseas as well. I feel it would be great if the brands that have received the TFA are always in the spotlight.

I believe this is an award that presents an "opportunity" to give a supportive push to the designers who have been eyeing the international market but were unable to take another step towards it.

・独自のスタイルがあるか。
・それを手に取り、お金を出して、欲しいと思って着る人が想像できるか。
・海外では為替などの関係で、日本よりも高いプライスで店頭に並ぶが、その際に他のブランドに引けを取らない、通用する服作りをしているか。

・Does it have a unique style?
・Can it be imagined that people would pick it up, would want it and pay for it?
・Due to exchange rates, the products hit the store shelves overseas with a higher price than in Japan. Are the garments of a quality that will not be outdone by other brands under such circumstances?

TFA：海外の有名なアワードのように、それを受賞したことが、世界的にもステイタスとなるような、栄誉あるアワードとなるか、ブランドを支援する賞金を授与したり、工場背景の紹介など、受賞したあと、ブランドにとって本当に成長できるアワードとなることを期待する。
ブランド：ここ2～3年、韓国や、東南アジア、中国など、かつてはあまり見かけなかったアジアの国々から、素晴らしい才能のデザイナーたちが、輩出されている。オリジナルのスタイルがあることはもちろんだけれど、国内独自のファッショントレンドではなく、世界基準のモードとしての服作りをしていることが、成功の鍵ではないかと思う。日本人がその中に最近出ていないような気がします。ぜひがんばってほしいです。

TFA: I hope that the TFA becomes an honorable award just like other reputable awards overseas, such that winning the award would be a matter of status throughout the world. Also, I expect it to become an award such that winning the award would translate into actual growth for the brand, such as receiving the prize-money that would support the brand, introduction of the background of the workshop etc.
Brand: In the past 2-3 years, designers with great talent have been appearing one after the other from several Asian countries such as South Korea, South-east Asian countries and China, which were never seen in the past. They certainly have original styles, but I think that creating garments of global standards rather than following the fashion trend of one's own country, is key to success. I have a feeling that Japanese designers do not appear to be amongst those designers recently. I really want them to work hard.

日本のファッションが世界に羽ばたくための、登竜門のようになればと思っています。
国内のデザイナーは、素晴らしい感性とモノづくりの繊細さを持っていて、世界的に見ても十分に競っていける力があると感じています。しかしながら、欧米に比べると、まだファッションを国外に持っていくことが、環境として十分でない状況もあります。
TFAが、国内だけでなく、海外に目線を向けるきっかけとして機能し、海外進出を考えるブランドに環境を提供する役割を担ってくれればと思います。

I would like to serve as a gateway to success and enable Japanese fashion to spread its wings around the world.
I feel that the Japanese designers have what it takes to compete globally. They have excellent sensitivity and a subtlety in their manufacturing. However, in comparison to Europe and the United States, there is still lack of an environment conducive to bringing the fashion outside of Japan.
TFA would serve as an opportunity to turn the eyes to the overseas market rather than focusing on Japan alone. I hope it will assume the role of providing an environment for brands that wish to expand their business overseas.

デザインの創造性や素材、ディテール、モノづくりへのこだわりを重点的に見ていきました。上述と重なる部分もありますが、このデザイナーやブランドでなければ、表現しきれないであろうという強いオリジナリティーが感じられるかも非常に重要だと考えています。

We focused on how much attention was given to creativity of the design, textile, details, and the making. Although there is some overlap with what I mentioned before, I do believe that it is extremely important, to have distinct originality, so much that you feel it could not have been expressed had it not been for this designer or brand.

日本のファッションは、世界中のファッション関係者が注目していて、期待度も高いです。
積極的に海外を意識し、そこでブランドを表現し、日本のファッションの素晴らしさを伝えていくことを期待します。それと同時に、まだ課題があることも事実です。特に価格面ではブランドのポジショニング以上の価格で販売されていることも多いので、ブランディングやモノづくり、セールスの体制を含めて、欧米で受け入れられるための工夫もしていかなければならないと思っています。

The eyes of everyone around the word in the fashion industry are on Japanese fashion and they have high expectations.
I hope that we become positively aware of the overseas market, showcase our brand there and let them know about the magnificence of Japanese fashion. Meanwhile, it is true that there are still some challenges. Especially, in regards to price, products are often being sold at a price higher than the positioning of the brand. Hence, we need to work on the framework for branding, making and sales, and do all kinds of things to catch on with Europe and the United States.

先ほども少し触れましたが、とても有意義で、意味のある、地に足の着いたアワードだと思います。
ファッションの感性は十人十色。
ファッション性やテクニックや感覚だけで判断するアワードも実際に多い中、ビジネスとして一番基本の“売る”という部分をきちんと判断材料に入れている考え方が素晴らしいと思いました。情熱を持って物づくりをしているデザイナーさんたちが、きちんとビジネスとして継続して“夢”を売っていける、その大きな一歩を手助けするようなアワードだと思います。

I touched upon this earlier as well. This is a very significant, meaningful and down-to-earth award.
Fashion sensitivity is different in every person.
Although there are many awards that judge based only on fashionability, technique and sense, I think the idea of including the "selling" aspect, which is very fundamental to business, as criteria for judgment, is fabulous. This is an award that gives a helping hand to designers who are passionate about their work, to take a giant leap towards sustaining as a proper business and selling "dreams".

バイヤーの視点で、バイイングする感覚で審査しました。（弊社にテイストが合うかどうかは基準として関係なく広いバイイングの視点で見ています。）
また、肩書きや経歴はほとんど審査ポイントに入れていません。
まずはセンスが良いかどうか。“売る”ことは大切ですが、売れるだけでは意味がありません。格好良く、独自性があるということはファッションとして大前提。
また世界に発信していくには飛びぬけた感性や独自性が必要です。
惹かれたかどうか、欲しいかどうか、着てみたいと思うか、お店でその服を見てお客様がわくわくするかどうか、そこをクリアしてから、価格は妥当かどうか、売れるかどうか、この先にビジネスとしての広がりを感じるかどうかなどを判断の基準としました。

I judged from a buyer’s perspective, in the sense of buying. (I did not consider whether or not the taste would suite our company. I looked at it from a wider buying perspective.)
Also, the titles and background were not taken into account while judging.
I started with whether or not there was a good sense of fashion. Although "selling" is important, being salable alone has no meaning. Looking great and being unique is a major premise of fashion.
An outstanding sensitivity and originality are also necessary to reach out to the world.
Is it attractive, does anyone feel like having it, does anyone feel like wearing it, is the customer excited looking at the dress in the store - these had to be cleared first. Then, whether or not the price is reasonable, will it sell or not, whether or not you can sense business expansion in the days ahead, were included in the criteria for judgment.

世界各地を見て回って思うのが、日本のファッションへの関心の高さやレベルが世界でも上位にあるということ。
NYやパリのファッション関係者たちも、“東京は本当に面白い”“日本製は質が良い”
“最も今行ってインスピレーションを受ける国”など沢山のポジティブな意見をくれます。
しかしながらその評価とは別に、世界で通用するブランドは実際あまり多くは出てきていません。10年前、20年前よりも遥かに世界は近く身近にあります。それはとてもラッキーなことです。日本から生まれた感性、商品が世界の人の手に渡りそこに笑顔やドラマをもたらす・・・。この先そんな素敵な絵を見ることができたらと思います。人の心を動かすような洋服が日本からもっともっと生まれることを強く望んでいます！

After having seen and traveled various parts of the world, I think people have one of the highest level of interest in Japanese fashion in the world.
Even those concerned with fashion in NY and Paris had many positive opinions - "Tokyo is really exciting", "The products made in Japan has good quality", "It is a country where you could get totally inspired".
However, apart from all this appreciation, in reality there are still not many brands that are world-class. The world has come far smaller than what it was 10 or 20 years back. We are quite lucky in that sense. The fashion sense and products that have originated in Japan reach the people around the world and bring a smile on their face or lead to an emotional moment...... I hope to be able to see such a wonderful scene in the future. I strongly wish that more and more touching and inspiring ensembles be created in Japan.

まだ１回目なので分かりませんが、TFAはすごく重要なものだという認識と、世界へ発信するためには今までの型にはまったものではいけないと考えています。

Since this was just the first time, I am not very sure, but I am aware that TFA is very important, and I believe that if you want to reach out to the world, the conventional method is not going to work.

そのブランドを通じて世の中に何をしたいのかという点でしょうか。

How the brand expresses what they want to do in this world.

海外の方が日本人に期待する、生産背景を含めた細部への気配りはもちろんですが、物だけではなくカルチャーも伝えられる存在になるブランドが、東京から出て行くことを期待します。SNSを利用することも今の時代には欠かせない手段のような気がします。

Obviously, that would be attention to details including the production background, which is expected of Japanese people from those abroad. I also hope that brands that not only present products but send out the culture as well would come forth from Tokyo. I think using SNS has also become such important now.

デザイナーたちの才能を称えるアワードは、彼らにとって大きな名誉になるでしょう。日本ならではの技術を評価することは特に重要です。
日本のファッション文化はある意味、とても特殊ですが、それを世界中に広めるお手伝いができることは光栄です。

Any award that recognizes talent is a great honor for a designer. It is especially important to recognize the special skills that the country of Japan cultivates.
Japanese culture is a very special culture that I am honored to help promote around the world.

まず、実際の製品を見ることが常に重要です。東京のデザイナーたちが生み出すものが、世界的な欧米ブランドのものと、どういう関係性になっていくか。すべては“製品”にあります。色、生地、形、そしてものづくり全体の美学は何でしょうか。これが、製品において最も重要な質問です。
2つ目のポイントはウェブサイトです。明確なブランドメッセージがあるか、ユーザビリティを考慮しているか。
この2つが、私が重視した評価基準です。

It is always most important to look at the product. How do the clothes relate to other brands that are important in Europe and the US. For me, everything begins with product. What are the colors, fabrics, shapes and overall aesthetic? These are the most important questions. The second factor is the website. Is there a clear brand message? Is the navigation easy? These were my two most important criteria.

驚いたり、目を奪われたり、魅了されたいですね。
私は、欲望に貪欲でなければいけない。つまり、東京のデザイナーは、常にファッションの世界において、私の関心を引きつけるものであってほしいと思っています。

I want to be surprised, dazzled and seduced. I need to feel the emotion of desire. That is what always interests me in the world of fashion.
